Social Justice: Salvation Army Feeding Program

Reminder!!!  Salvation Army breakfast pan handout the weekend of February 6 & 7; breakfast pan collection the weekend of February 13 and 14.

Every Tuesday and Friday from 5 to 8 a.m., volunteers wake up early to work in the Salvation Army Canteen, a mobile kitchen, handing out doughnuts, eggs, coffee, juice and milk to the homeless throughout Des Moines.  The canteen stops at the downtown YWCA, low-income apartment complexes and other areas where people are in need. The homeless clients include children and teenagers. 
   

Organizations and churches prepare and freeze breakfast casseroles that are used to feed homeless clients. So the Salvation Army provides the recipes and the pans and you provide the cooking.  Volunteers help serve the food. If you want to help distribute food, please call Judy Anderson at 278-0939. This is one way you and your family can be of service to those who are homeless.

 

St. Pius Parish has supported the Salvation Army Breakfast program for over six years.  Members of the Social Justice Committee organize the bimonthly collection. 

Catholic Social Teaching: Option for the Poor and Vulnerable: A basic moral test is how our most vulnerable members are faring. In a society marred by deepening divisions between rich and poor, our tradition recalls the story of the Last Judgment (Mt 25:31-46) and instructs us to put the needs of the poor and vulnerable first.

There is now a freezer located in the kitchen of the Martha and Mary Fellowship Center.  If you forget to return a pan, you can stop by and put it in the freezer during the hours the Church is open.  Questions? Call Gail Kotval, 251-5886 or Connie Cade, 270-1044. 
  

Casserole Recipe

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

1 lb. sausage, browned, drained and crumbled
OR 3/4 lb. chopped ham
2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
2 cups milk
4 eggs
1/2 tsp. pepper
1/2. Tsp. salt
1 cup Bisquick Mix

Spray a 11x13 aluminum pan with Pam. Spread meat and cheese evenly on the bottom. In a blend or bowl combine eggs, milk. Add Bisquick Mix, pepper, and salt and mix thoroughly. Pour mixture over the meat and cheese. Bake 35-45 minutes until casserole is firm in the middle. Cool a few minutes and cover with aluminum foil and freeze.
