Frequently Asked
Questions
Do
I need construction experience?
No. In fact 90% of
volunteers have little to no construction experience. Lead workers experienced in the construction industry
are on site each day. They will provide instruction and training and answer questions.
Does it cost me anything?
There is no charge for volunteering, but donations are welcome.
Each congregation is required to provide financial support to help pay for land and building materials. Any money raised beyond the required contribution
will build the financial base for a larger project in the future.
When can I work?
The
Steering Committee selects open days from the HFH master build schedule and commits to providing construction and/or food
volunteers on those days. Workdays are Thursday through Saturday. Contact Dennis Rau
for St. Pius X build dates.
I can’t
take a day off from work/I don’t have vacation – how else can I help?
Volunteers that are not able to help on the construction site can volunteer in activities such as fund raising,
lunch preparation and delivery, and prayer support.
Does the new homeowner
pay a mortgage?
Yes. HFH homeowners repay an
interest-free mortgage over 20 years. They must also volunteer 400 hours of “sweat equity.”
Habitat
does not charge interest on its mortgages, nor do they profit from them. Mortgage payments from Habitat homeowners
go directly into a trust to build more Habitat homes.
