Habitat home dedication - let's celebrate!

Our Habitat for Humanity build with our Circle of Faith parishes is complete! We have had a great group of volunteers from St. Pius, Holy Trinity, Ss. John and Paul and St. Francis.

Phillip and Josephine's home at 2106 Meek Ave. will be dedicated on October 1st at 10 a.m.  Please join us in celebrating this joyous event.

Weather permitting, a portion of celebration will be held indoors (sponsor recognition, some prayers and Bible presentation) followed by an outdoor portion which will be shared with the buyers of the neighboring Habitat home. We'll have a "rain program" option in case the joint portion of the event is unworkable due to weather. Please pray for sunshine and beautiful weather!

Welcome to St. Pius X Habitat for Humanity.  The theme for this year's build is "Give a Day".  If you have ever wanted to try out your skills in the construction trade, Habitat for Humanity is for you.  In one day, you can acquire new skills, meet new people, and know you are helping a family build a home.  Please contact us if you are interested in contributing to this wonderful ministry.  No construction experience is required.

St. Pius has completed our second Circle of Faith Build with St. Francis of Assisi, Holy Trinity and Saints John and Paul (Altoona). This is our third build overall. The address 2106 Meek Avenue, Des Moines. All the participating parishes provided volunteers, food for volunteers and financial support. We continue to build our financial investment in the project. The envelope for the Special Monthly Offering has the Habitat for Humanity project listed as an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need construction experience?
No. In fact 90% of volunteers have little to no construction experience.  Lead workers experienced in the construction industry are on site each day.  They will provide instruction and training and answer questions.

Does it cost me anything?
There is no charge for volunteering, but donations are welcome.  Each congregation is required to provide financial support to help pay for land and building materials. Any money raised beyond the required contribution will build the financial base for a larger project in the future.

When can I work?
The Steering Committee selects open days from the HFH master build schedule and commits to providing construction and/or food volunteers on those days.  Workdays are Thursday through Saturday.  Contact Dennis Rau for St. Pius X build dates.

I can’t take a day off from work/I don’t have vacation – how else can I help?
Volunteers that are not able to help on the construction site can volunteer in activities such as fund raising, lunch preparation and delivery, and prayer support.

Does the new homeowner pay a mortgage?
Yes.  HFH homeowners repay an interest-free mortgage over 20 years.  They must also volunteer 400 hours of “sweat equity.” Habitat does not charge interest on its mortgages, nor do they profit from them.  Mortgage payments from Habitat homeowners go directly into a trust to build more Habitat homes.
